oh wow it's a Torii gate made of wood right? you rarely ever see that, a lot of them are made of cement these days, it must be really old :) wish I could go to japan and see these things myself one day

Yes, the gate is made of 1700 years old cypress wood and it's built  in 1920.

The largest torii in Japan is actually at Heian Jingu in Kyoto :) I have been to both of these places in the past week, I can vouch for it as a fact haha. This is a lovely picture though, I love it!

Thanks! I don't remember where I read that this is the tallest one, but yes, Heian Jingu Torii seems to be over two times taller than the one in Meiji Shrine. I found also information about Yasukuni Shrine Torii, which is also a huge gate.

hahaha i remember stumbling upon this entrance and not knowing what he hell it was. I saw the Chrysanthemum symbols on the Torii so I knew it must have been something important.
